About

Malini Basu is the founder of Sanku Elevates and a journalist-turned-communications strategist whose work spans sports, sustainability, and artificial intelligence (AI). With more than two decades of experience in media and public leadership, she focuses on translating innovation into human impact.

She currently serves in economic development and communications leadership for the City of Long Beach, California, where she is helping shape the city’s international profile and sustainable-growth strategy ahead of the 2028 Olympics. Previously, she served as Director of Communications for Mayor Rex Richardson, leading major initiatives that connected civic leadership with community voices and global partnerships.

Before entering public service, Malini built an award-winning career in broadcast journalism, reporting for ABC, NBC, CBS, and FOX affiliates in major U.S. markets including Dallas, Boston, Houston, and New York. Her coverage of public safety, social justice, and innovation earned her three Emmy Awards, nine nominations, and two National Edward R. Murrow Awards.

Malini’s career is defined by her relentless pursuit of truth and her compassionate approach to storytelling. At ABC’s WFAA in Dallas, she reported on critical events such as the Astroworld tragedy, where she supported grieving families in their time of need. Her reporting on the aftermath of Vanessa Guillen’s death at Ft. Hood brought significant attention to issues of trust and reform in the military. She also made notable contributions to discussions on abortion rights and the impact of inflation on families, ensuring that vital issues were brought to light.

Her investigative journalism at Boston 25 News led to meaningful changes, including the resignation of a Massachusetts State Police colonel. Malini’s courageous reporting extended beyond borders when she traveled to El Salvador to interview gang members in one of the world’s most dangerous prisons. She covered high-profile trials, such as those of Aaron Hernandez and the Boston Marathon bomber, and provided critical on-the-ground reporting during the pandemic.

Her efforts to support struggling families and advocate for marginalized communities were widely recognized by local and state officials.

Malini’s journalism career began at the NBC affiliate in Plattsburgh, a small city near the Canadian border.

Breaking into the field wasn’t easy—Malini sent out over 150 resume tapes, only to receive a single response. Despite the odds, her perseverance paid off when she landed her first on-air job. This early experience taught her the value of determination and resilience, qualities that have since defined her illustrious career.

Her dedication to journalism was further honed with a degree in Journalism and Business from St. John’s University in Queens, NY. Malini was born in Kolkata, India and was raised in Queens, NY., where she grew up in an immigrant family.

With a career spanning impactful stories and in leadership roles, Malini Basu continues to be a powerful advocate for change and a trusted voice in public service.
